DEPT 14 - PLANT AND SOIL SCIENCE
CLASS A - FIELD CROPS Premiums: Blue $2.00 Red $1.75 White $1.50 Pink $1.25
- Exhibitor must be in the 4th Grade or over and enrolled in a Field Crop Project (Corn, Forage, Small Grains, or Soybeans) - Exhibitor may bring up to 5 exhibits. - Each exhibit must be cleaned and groomed and include variety name, date planted and date harvested. - Exhibits of dried field crops harvested from the previous year need to be exhibited by members enrolled in that project for 2 consecutive years - Exhibit may be a poster (no larger than 14 x 22), display, report, etc.
Examples of Corn Exhibits: - Three corn stalks (roots not necessary) - Six ears of corn, husked - Shelled corn, quart size jar (open only to 2nd year corn project members) - High moisture corn (open only to 2nd year corn project members)
Examples of Forage Exhibits: - Alfalfa or mixture, one slice in plastic bag - Alfalfa or mixture, sheath (tied at the top and bottom) - Haylage/Oatlage in gallon size plastic bag
Examples of Small Grain Exhibits: - Dried, one quart jar (open only to 2nd year small grain project members) - Sheath, tied in 3 places (tied neck should be 3 “ in diameter) Examples of Soybean Exhibits: - Dried, one quart jar (open only to 2nd year soybean project members) - Sheath, tied in 3 places (tied neck should be 3” in diameter)

CLASS B – VEGETABLES Premiums: Blue $1.75 Red $1.50 White $1.25 Pink $1.00
- Exhibitors in Grades 4 – 6 may bring your 6 best vegetable exhibits. No two of the same variety (Gold Pak carrots and Thumbelina carrots are different varieties of carrots) - Exhibitors in Grades 7 and over may bring your 10 best vegetable exhibits. No two of the same variety. - Exhibitor must name the variety on each entry tag (example: Detroit Red beets or Gold Pak carrots) - Garden exhibits must be from your garden - Refer to project information “Exhibiting & Judging Vegetables” by H. C. Harrison for preparing your exhibit - Bring the number of specimens according to size of vegetable (small such as peas/beans = 10, green onions = 6; med such as beets, peppers, onions, cucumbers = 3; large such as cabbage/broccoli = 1) 1. Plates will be furnished

CLASS D – GARDEN FUN/ PLANT CRAFTS Premiums: Blue $3.50 Red $3.00 White $2.50 Pink $2.00 - Open to any member enrolled in the vegetable garden project or Plant Crafts Project - Exhibit will be judged on information and completeness and unique creativity - No silk or plastic flowers allowed - All materials to be collected and dried by exhibitor Examples of exhibits: Vegetable arrangement (may use any vegetable or parts of vegetables grown in garden), vegetable character (using parts of vegetables for facial features), Seed craft (using seeds to make a picture); 6 different vegetables for their nutritional value (Exhibitor furnishes a box which becomes part of the exhibit. Include a card telling why you chose these six and what they provide in our daily diet. If you use leafy vegetables such as lettuce or spinach that wilt easily, they may be placed in a container of water to keep them fresh.); Largest Veggie; pressed flower picture or bookmark; wreath; wall decorations; etc.

CLASS E – FRUIT Premiums: Blue $2.00 Red $1.75 White $1.50 Pink $1.25 - Open to anyone enrolled in the fruit project - Fruits must be selected and prepared for exhibit by member - Apples = 3 specimen; Grapes = 3 bunches; Small fruits & berries – ½ pint - Use same guidelines as for vegetables Lot No. 1.
