DEPT. 4 - SHEEP HEALTH REQUIREMENTS All animals exhibiting at the fair must be free of any contagious, infectious, or communicable disease.
Sheep originating from within Wisconsin - Sexually-intact sheep of any age, and all other sheep 12 months of age and older must be identified with official scrapie ear tags or other official individual identification. Sexually intact sheep exposed to scrapie will not be allowed to exhibit.
Sheep originating from outside Wisconsin - All sheep shall be accompanied by a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection. All sheep must be identified with official scrapie ear tags or other official individual identification. Sheep exposed to scrapie will not be allowed to enter Wisconsin.
GENERAL RULES 1. Youth are required to sign up for showmanship/carcass evaluation on fair entry form in order to participate. 2. Limit of 6 animals per exhibitor, excluding showmanship & carcass. 3. Exhibitors may show two market lambs providing they are not in the same weight class. 4. Breeding stock shall be purebred and registered animals. If they are not, they will be shown in the Commercial Class. Any other breed is reserved from breeds not listed as a class. 5. All breeding classes of sheep, registered Columbia, Corriedales, Ramboulliets, and Targhees (wool breeds) shall be shown with wool lengths according to breed standards. All other breeds (meat breeds) shall have been completely shorn within two months of show date and have no more than 2 inches of wool growth. It is best to follow breed standards. 6. A pair of lambs is one ram lamb and one ewe lamb 7. A flock is one ram (purebred lamb or yearling) and two ewes (combinations of lamb, yearling, and older) 8. A pen of finished lambs is 2 market lambs only. 9. A Market Lamb can be a wether or ewe. If a Ewe is used it is excluded from breeding stock classes. 10. Exhibitors may not use another exhibitor's animals to compete in pairs and flocks 11. Market Lambs may only be shown in market, pen of finished lambs, and showmanship classes 12. Explorers may exhibit one animal in the Showmanship Class and/or appropriate breeding stock class . The exhibitor must be able to control the animal. It is the responsibility of the exhibitor to follow health requirements and rules for the Department. 13. Market lambs will be weighed between 1 - 2 p.m. on entry day of the fair 14. Current Meat Animal Rules apply to market classes for market animals 15. While on the fair grounds all animals must be fitted by the exhibitor, immediate family, another Junior Exhibitor, or a St. Croix 4-H Project Leader. Immediate family is defined as the Exhibitor’s parent, brother, sister, step-parent, grandparent, or legal guardian. If project member does not abide by the rule, the animal is subject to disqualification and will be ineligible for auction or show per discretion of the St. Croix County 4-H/FFA Meat Animal Committee and or Breeding Stock Committee CLASS A - MARKET CLASS Premiums: Blue $5.00 Red $4.00 White $3.00 Pink $2.00 Lot No.: 1. Identification forms are required for each animal enetered at the fair, including commercial, crossbred, and registered animals at the time of Breeding Stock animal check-in 2. Proof of registration must be presented at the time of check-in for all registered animals. Proof of registration includes one of the following: registration of animal exhibited OR letter from the breed association declaring the animal is registered 3. Breeding Stock Sheep check-in time is Thursday, 4 – 5 pm in their pens - NO MARKET TAGS 4. Managerial animals (animals not owned by the exhibitor) must be established by May 1 and the managerial forms turned into the St. Croix County Breeding Stock Committee by June 1 5. Crossbred animals – the sire and dam must be two different breeds 6. Commercial animals – the sire and dam must be of the same breed, non-registered
Age Classifications for 2009 (2010): A ram or ewe lamb is one born on or after January 1 of exhibit year A yearling (ewe or ram) is born between Jan 1 2008 (2009) to Dec 31, 2008 (2009) A ewe over 2 years is one born previous to December 31, 2008 (2009 )
