DEPT. 3 - SWINE

HEALTH REQUIREMENTS

All animals exhibited at the fair must be free of any contagious, infections or communicable disease.

 

Swine originating from within Wisconsin:  All swine shall be accompanied by a Wisconsin intrastate movement certificate stating that the herd of origin has been inspected on the farm within 30 days prior to the exhibition and no apparent disease has been present in the herd for the past 30 days.  The certificate must also include all required test documentation.

 

Swine originating from outside Wisconsin:  All swine shall be accompanied by a certificate of veterinary inspection stating that no pseudorabies vaccine has been administered to the swine, and contain all required test documentation.

All swine shall have a negative pseudorabies test within 30 days of arrival at the fair or originate from a qualified-negative pseudorabies herd that is qualified by testing 7% of the herd each month, or originate from a commercial swine herd in a state classified as Stage IV or V.  The date of the last monthly test must be included on the certificate.

Swine entering directly from a Stage II state are not eligible for show or exhibition.


GENERAL RULES

1.     Youth are required to sign up for showmanship & carcass evaluation on entry form in order to participate.

2.     Limit of 1 market animal per exhibitor

3.     Each member must have supervised the growing of the entry for at least 3 months previous to showing.

4.     Judging of swine classes will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Friday

5.     Market animals will be weighed in between 2 – 3:30 p.m. entry day of the fair.  All hogs are eligible for show.  After weigh-ins the animals will be divided evenly into appropriate amount of classes according to weights determined by fair officials.  If 16 or more animals are entered in any weight class, the class may be divided into 2 or more approximately equal lots within a class and each group judged as a class.  The top 2 blues from each lot number within a class will compete for champion of that weight class.

6.     Auction Sale:  To be eligible for the auction, minimum weight will be 235 lbs. maximum will be 285 lbs.

7.     Explorers may exhibit one breeding stock animal in appropriate class and/or may participate in showmanship with a breeding stock animal or some else’s market animal.  The Explorer must be able to control the animal.  It is the responsibility of the exhibitor to follow health requirements and rules for the department.

8.     Breeding Stock – Proof of registration must be presented for all purebred animals.  Proof of registration means one of the following:            Registration of animal exhibited or letter from breed association declaring animal is registered

9.     Current Meat Animal Project rules apply to market classes

10.   Proper attire is strongly recommended.  Includes appropriate footwear for species, good polo shirt or button down shirt, and a pair of jeans of slacks (long pants) in good repair.

11.  While on the fair grounds all animals must be fitted by the exhibitor, immediate family, another Junior Exhibitor, or a St. Croix 4-H Project Leader.  Immediate family is defined as the Exhibitor’s parent, brother, sister, step parent, grandparent, or legal guardian.  If project member does not abide by the rule, the animal is subject to disqualification and will be ineligible for auction or show per discretion of the St. Croix County 4-H/FFA Meat Animal Committee

BREEDING STOCK

Premiums: Blue $ 6.00 Red $5.00 White $4.00 Pink $3.00

  1. Identification forms are required for each animal entered at the fair, including commercial, crossbred, and registered animals at the time of Breeding Stock Animal check-in
  2. Proof of registration must be presented at the time of check-in for all registered animals.  Proof of registration includes one of the following:  registration of animal exhibited  or  letter from the breed association declaring the animal is registered
  3. Breeding Stock Swine check-in times is Thursday, 2:30 – 3:30 pm in pens  --  NO MARKET TAGS
  4. Managerial animals (animals not owned by the exhibitor) must be established by May 1 and the managerial forms must be turned in to the St Croix Co. Breeding Stock Committee by June 1
  5. Crossbred animal – the sire and dam must be two different breeds
  6. Commercial animal – the sire and dam must be of the same breed, non-registered
  7. Classes may be combined at the judge’s discretion

  1. The dam of the offspring needs to be owned at the time of breeding
  2. All animals will be shown at one time
  3. Each exhibitor is allowed to enter only one animal
  4. Commercial is a single breed animal with no registration papers
